As you get older you may suffer from more health issues. Of course, it is always best to seek medical advice if you are feeling unwell or have symptoms that you are unsure about. However, here are five of the common health conditions to look out for as you get older.

    Osteoporosis

This can occur as you age because your bones can become thinner and weaker. The more fragile your bones are, the more likely it is that you will suffer from broken bones or fractures. This condition has no symptoms, so the chances are you won’t know you have it unless you break a bone. However, if you are concerned you could ask your medical practitioner to perform a bone density test as part of your check-up.

    Arthritis

This can be a very painful condition and it is caused by a lifetime of wear and tear on the joints. The fluid and cartilage in the joint wear out causing the bones to scrape against each other. This affects many people in later life, but the good news is that it is treatable. Don’t hesitate to go to your doctor if you are experiencing joint pain as there are many treatment options available.

    Alzheimer’s Disease

This is a cognitive impairment that can occur as you get older. It happens when the brain breaks down and you stop being able to remember or think clearly. You may have trouble performing basic tasks. A doctor will be able to investigate your symptoms; however, long-term support is available at St Louis Senior Living, St Louis Hills Assisted Living & Memory Care where they have trained staff on hand to help you with any aspects of day-to-day living that you are finding challenging.

    Diabetes

You can develop diabetes regardless of your age, but it becomes more of a potential issue the older you get. It is caused by the sugar in your blood becoming too high and it can lead to other conditions such as heart disease, strokes, or eye damage. The symptoms include extreme hunger or thirst, and blurry vision. A blood test will show you if you are suffering from the condition and a medical practitioner should carry this out as part of your routine check-up as you get older.

    Heart Disease

Heart disease can be a common condition as you get older because an older heart often needs to work harder to pump the blood around your body. This can cause heart attacks and strokes. The symptoms might include pain in your chest, weakening muscles. If you are unsure, call 911.

You can lower your risk of heart disease by following a healthy diet and exercise program and giving up smoking and drinking alcohol.
