What is a spirit?
The six main pure spirits—gin, vodka, brandy, tequila, rum, and whisky—are made from grains or other plants and contain alcohol over 38% ABV. Fermentation produces an alcoholic liquid that is distilled into pure spirit in a still.
What is a liqueur?
Many traditional spirits are flavoured today, making it hard to distinguish spirits from liqueurs. Adding flavours to liquors creates liqueurs. Sweeteners include fruit syrups, herbs, spices, coffee, chocolate, milk, and nuts. Sweetness and flavour dilute the alcohol to 15–30% ABV with smoother taste.
It is frequently less alcoholic than spirits. Liqueur is flavoured, sweetened alcohol. Popular digestifs and cocktails are the key ingredients.
Popular Examples of Spirits:
● Rum
The Caribbean and Central America make white, golden, black, or aged rum from sugar cane juice or molasses. Caramel, vanilla, and oak make rum sweet and spicy.
● Vodka
Colourless vodka is used in some of our favourite beverages. Vodka may be created from grain, potatoes, apples, or honey, unlike whiskey and tequila. Russia, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia produce most vodka.
● Tequila
Tequila is a Mezcal made from blue agave, called for its Mexican origins. Only Jalisco may create tequila in Mexico due to rigorous laws.
● Brandy
The result of distilling wine and other fruit liquids is brandy. The most well-known French brands of this ruby-coloured liquor are Cognac and Armagnac, while other brandies include Italian Grappa and Chilean Pisco.
● Gin
This clear distilled spirit may be flavoured with various botanicals and is prepared from neutral grains like wheat or barley. However, the European Union Drinks Spirits Regulations state that the main taste must be juniper berries for it to be named gin.
● Whiskey
Whiskey—what is it? The basic ingredients are yeast, water, and cereal grains. Besides malted barley, maize and rye may create bourbon and rye whiskey.
Examples of Well-Known Liqueurs:
● Baileys Irish Cream
This thick and creamy liqueur contains Irish whiskey, cream, and delicate chocolate and vanilla flavours.
● Orange Liqueur
It is ideal for adding a zesty kick to margaritas and other cocktail recipes, enhancing the delicious flavours of oranges.
● Sweet Liqueur
It tastes sweet, especially almonds. It is a well-liked liqueur used in delectable cocktail recipes that include desserts.
● Black Raspberry Liqueur
This one is used in French Martini cocktails. Many cocktails may be elegant with black raspberry liqueur.
